The young men interact with the lecturer with the gestures of their hands, which are raised to participate in the lecture or point to the text. [Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A secular judge, recognisable by his hat and his fur-lined collar, is depicted seated, his left hand holding a sceptre and his right index finger raised to address the people in front of him (perhaps to deliver a verdict). The group before him consists of three laymen, two of whom are smaller in stature than the other characters, and a cleric, who is presumably their legal representative. One of the shorter men raises his right index finger, while the other places his hand on the cleric’s shoulder to delegate his legal claim; the cleric addresses the judge by raising his left hand and his right index finger. Behind the judge is another cleric, possibly the representative of the opposite party, who raises his left hand and places the other on the judge’s shoulder to get his attention. The scene takes place under three trefoil arches; the architectural structure could be a representation of a courtroom.]

The bride is escorted by a woman, who raises her right index finger (perhaps to identify herself as a witness to the ceremony), while the groom is escorted by a man, who touches his arm to encourage him. The scene takes place under three arches.]
